Discarded Plastic transformation

After a successful start transforming T-shirts, our online classes moved on to plastic, to turn them into jewellery pieces.

We looked at PET plastic bottles, some clear, others tinted with colour and producing material like driftglass from the sea. We looked too at HDPE (high-density polyethylene), in milky translucent white, with the light coming through, giving it a delicate and intricate appearance when transformed into organic forms.

Both these types of plastic are easy to cut and easy to manipulate. The workshop created components for jewellery. Flowers were formed with three petals, moulded into a more organic shape and then assembled into a necklace design.

We moved on to bubble wrap and plastics bags, and showed how layer s can be fused together to create a new kind of material, that resembles mother-of-pearl. In the workshop we cut circles with a template, and then assembled them into a dangly earring cluster design, using pre-loved earrings and old broken jewellery.

From Cycle Tubes to Statement Necklace
